According to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, multiple local law enforcement agencies were involved in a stand-off that started early Saturday morning with a man who was threatening suicide and in possession of a handgun.
The incident took place at a residence on Highway F36 West, and multiple residents tried to disarm the individual before the sheriff’s office and the Newton Police Department arrived at the scene. Upon arrival, deputies witnessed the individual run into the residence with a handgun, and authorities surrounded the home.
Officers then tried to make contact with the individual, and the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team also arrived at the scene. Additional support from NPD, an Iowa State Patrol aircraft unit and the Baxter and Monroe police departments also was received.
Reports indicate the collective of officers attempted to negotiate with the individual for the next six hours through loud speaker and the individual’s cell phone to no response. At 6:05 a.m. Saturday, the SERT team and a NPD Tactical team made their way into the residence and found the individual deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
It is the policy of the Daily News not to release the names of those who attempt suicide.
