CMB shows improvement in Perry tournament

About two weeks ago, when Collins-Maxwell/Baxter’s volleyball team lost a home matchup against Roland-Story, coach Scott Ranck said he saw some signs that his team was improving. On Thursday, Sept. 13, the team took the next step by getting its first two victories of the season in a tournament hosted by Perry.

The Raiders matched up with Panorama in their first match of the day, winning 21-17, 21-16. Senior Abbie Haupert led the team with seven kills in the two sets. Katie Ziesman had three, and Alex Hiavacek and Abbey Applegate each had one. Haupert also had four digs to lead the team. Bekah Pearson, Mackenzie Schmitz and Ziesman each had two. Applegate had three digs. Schmitz led the team in assists with 11.

In match No. 2 the Raiders defeated the tournament’s hosts — Perry — in two sets, winning 21-15, 21-18. Haupert had five kills. Payge Jurgens had four kills. Ziesman and Applegate each had two, and Hiacacek had one. Schmitz led in assists with 12. Applegate had one. Ziesman led with 10 digs, followed by Haupert’s eight. Pearson and Toni Spencer each had five digs. Schmitz had two. Jurgens, Applegate and Hiavacek each had one. Haupert recorded five blocks in the match.

In the team’s final match of the day, it fell in straight sets to Earlham, 21-16, 23-21, Jurgens led with seven kills followed by Haupert with six. Ziesman and Applegate had two apiece. Bridget Hurley had one kill. Jurgens recorded the only block for the Raiders. Scmitza led with seven digs. Jurgens and Applegate each had six digs. Pearson chipped in five digs. Ziesman had four. Spencer had three digs. Haupert had two, and Hurley had one.
