STORY CITY — Collins-Maxwell/Baxter’s football team walked onto Roland-Story’s football field on Friday night with two things in mind. The first had to be bouncing back from a tough 44-27 home-opening loss at the hands of Gilbert. The other was avenging the loss to the Norsemen a year ago, when R-S came to Baxter and picked up its only win of the season.
CMB accomplished both of those goals with a big 42-7 win in Story City, putting together a complete team effort on the offensive side of the football. Three different players completed passes for the Raiders, six players got at least one carry, five different players caught passes and four different players scored touchdowns.
CMB coach Rob Luther was brief in his comments about the game, but was very happy to see his boys take a step in the right direction.
“We played much better,” Luther said. “We got ahead 21-0 at halftime, and our offense put up more than 400 yards.”
Senior Zach Samson led the Raiders with 226 all-purpose yards, 171 through the air with two touchdowns and 55 rushing with one touchdown. Senior Zach Huffaker carried nine times for 54 yards and a touchdown. Bryce Kemp only carried the ball once, but it was a 67-yard rush for a touchdown. Senior Gabe Schabillion had 11 carries for 50 yards and a touchdown.
Huffaker caught four balls for 90 yards including a 62-yard catch for a touchdown. The junior Kemp caught two passes for 84 yards and a touchdown. Spencer Gauch, Austin Moorman and Brady Stover each caught passes as well.
Junior Nick Littell led the Raiders in tackles with 11, including one tackle for loss. Logan Cory was second on the team with six tackles. Six Raiders — Kemp, John Engel, Moorman, Charles Robertson, Clayton Weltha and Samson — had five tackles apiece. Samson, Littell and Cory each recovered fumbles.
