Lynnville-Sully learns in losses at Newton tournament

Taking on teams from larger schools presented Lynnville-Sully High’s Hawk volleyball squad a learning experience Tuesday at the Newton Cardinal Varsity Volleyball Invitational.

“The teams were tougher than I had expected, but our plan was to come out and play the best we could.  We did some things very well and did our best to dig up hits that were coming very fast,” said Heather James, Hawk head coach, after her team went 0-5 at the tournament at Newton Senior High School.

“It was good to see some new competition. It will be good to start with teams in our conference who will be at the say playing level as us.”

Lynnville-Sully opened against Newton, which was ranked No. 12 in the Class 4A preseason poll. The Hawks lost 21-14, 21-7. Lyndsay Terpstra was 5 of 5 serving with one ace, plus had eight defensive digs. Jade Van Rees served one ace, going 3 of 3 serving, and she had four set assists. Cassie Cullen delivered two kills and made three digs while Shelby Davis had one kill and four digs.

The Hawks lost 21-17, 21-8 to preseason’s No. 6 Dowling Catholic in Class 5A. Davis rang up three ace serves on 7 of 7 from the service line and Macy Lanser was 6 of 7 serving with two aces. Cullen had a service ace. Davis came up with five digs and Van Rees had three digs. Lanser and Cullen each had one dig. Cullen downed two kills and Davis had one kill.

Lynnville-Sully went three sets against Oskaloosa, loosing a close contest. Oskaloosa won 21-17, 17-21, 15-13. Davis delivered eight kills to lead the net attack for the Hawks. Cullen had four kills while Taylor Vander Leest and Lanser each had two kills.

Van Rees went 11 of 12 at the service line against the Indians and had five service aces. Davis and Vander Leest each had one ace serve. Van Rees was credited with 14 set assists. Cullen came up with eight digs and Davis had seven digs. Vander Leest made four digs and Lanser had two digs.

Carlisle defeated Lynnville-Sully 21-11, 21-14. Cullen, Van Rees and Lysandra James each had a block assist at the net. Cullen put down five kills while James had two kills and Van Rees had one kill.

Terpstra was credited with six digs and Cullen had five digs. Serving was led be Cullen (4 of 4) and Van Rees (4 of 5) with one ace serve apiece.

The Hawks finished the night against ADM, which was ranked 10th in the preseason 4A poll, and lost 21-16, 21-14.

Vander Leest went 5 of 6 serving with one ace while Davis and Van Rees each were 3 of 3. Davis had one ace serve. Van Rees made seven set assists. Davis and Madison Rasmusson each had two kills. Terpstra came up with seven digs while Van Rees had four digs, Vander Leest and Davis each had three digs. Rasmusson had a dig.

“ As any team, our serve receive needs to improve, but you have that at the beginning of the season,” James said.

Lynnville-Sully (0-5) hosts Collins-Maxwell/Baxter on Tuesday, starting at 6 p.m.
