Discovering The ’Fax

Jasper County Tribune news editor Matt Nosco and I kind of have this rivalry thing going on.

Nosco is based out of the Colfax office or “The ’Fax” as we affectionately call it, while I’m here in Newton with our majestic, historic downtown building.

Nosco and I love to debate about random things, but the most common occurrence is our towns. We both love and take great pride in where we work and live.

He’s a proud Colfaxian and since I’ve been here, I don’t just bleed red, I bleed black as well, GO CARDS.

The point is, you have two guys, who before getting our jobs, had never visited either town and we like fighting over which town is better. This is great news for the readers of Jasper County. It shows you just how much we care about our jobs and the coverage we provide to the people who inhabit our areas.

I mean, of course, I’m absolutely biased towards Newton in this debate. However, this weekend Matt showed me and the other members of The Group, what life is like in The ’Fax during Mineral Springs Days — and it was great.

The main purpose of our trek west was, the “Get Smashed in Colfax” Demolition Derby — which was epic — and to hang out in Matt’s apartment for the first time. Is there anything better than hanging out with your friends, playing ridiculous card games and watching cars smash into each other?

It was my first demolition derby and I have been missing out. I wish the announcer from the derby could follow me around with a microphone and narrate my life, he was that good. Although he didn’t get me a “SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY!”  his commentary was both informative and entertaining.

He pretty much said what people were thinking. His demands for more fire and his epic play-by-play  of the brother versus brother small-car feature was incredible. They should seriously consider signing the guy up if they ever need a substitute announcer for Cardinal football games (seriously).

In addition to all the demolition derby fun, I have to admit, I found downtown Colfax to be quite charming. I love the fact the Shugar’s grocery store carried “Best Choice” products, which are based out of my hometown, Kansas City, Kan.

It was quaint and Matt was extremely proud of the new Mexican restaurant that just opened there (I had to remind him that Newton has two and two is always better than one) and just all of the other things happening around town with their Colfax Main Street Program.

So yeah, I’ll give Matt this, I underestimated how awesome The ’Fax is. However, I wish he would be in the county this weekend for the Bowlful of Blues concert at Maytag Park. Then we could show him how Newton throws a party!
