Dubuque, Des Moines install hi-tech parking meters

DES MOINES (AP) — Parking meters in Dubuque and Des Moines are going high-tech.

Dubuque city officials say parking meter customers can use their mobile phones to pay for parking at all of the city’s 1,800 meters.

Customers create an account using the PassportParking Mobile Pay app then they can use the app to pay. They also may call a phone number to pay or text their zone and space information that’s posted on the meter. Users are charged a 25-cent fee to use the service.

The system sends text message alerts 15 minutes prior to expiration.

Des Moines officials say they are installing 24 new smart solar-powered meters that accept credit cards, coins and the city’s smart cards. The meters are going in to the Western Gateway and East Village areas near downtown.
