Editor's Note: The following letter was written in response to a sports column written by Daily News sports writer Dustin Turner.
To the editor:
Although I love the idea of your list — I always did similar lists when I was sports editor at the Stuart Herald — I have to defend the C-M colors and baseball uniforms.
I don’t see the orange and navy very often, but I feel we make it work. Our orange away baseball tops are very bright and they accentuate the color combination. Our home whites may be Dri-Fit shirts, but they consist of more then just the Tigerhawks logo. They are made to resemble the Toronto Blue Jays uniforms.
The orange letters and numbers may be a little smaller then I had hoped, but they still brighten up the shirt. The accessories we have also help tie together the “execution” of our uniforms.
The orange belts and the orange and blue stripe on the pants are simple, but look sharp. Our helmets help out, as well.
The white helmets we wear on the road mesh well with the orange top. The bright orange helmets we wear at home are meant to liven up the simplicity of the whites.
What brings it all together is our cap. Not only is it not a flat-bill cap, like the others in the area, but we tie in all three colors (so all colors are present at home) including a sharp looking C-M logo.
We have sold many hats to people besides baseball players. Not only do parents, students, teachers and fans request a hat, many people not even associated with C-M ask to have one. I’ve coached baseball at four schools in my career and the hats we have at C-M are by far the best looking hats I have worn.
Granted, we wear simple Dri-Fit shirts at times, but there are numerous reasons for wearing them:
• Cost: they are much less expensive than the expensive full button-up jerseys,
• Temperature: when it’s 100 F in July, no one wants to throw on a polyester button-up jersey, and
• Replacement: if something happens to the $100 polyester top, good luck getting that replaced.
I am huge on simplicity. Although the orange is flashy, I still think that our uniforms are simple and executed well.
I appreciate [Dustin’s] candor, but I have to disagree with his opinion. Red, black and white are very tough to compete with, but I think C-M makes their color scheme work, especially on the baseball diamond.
This is written in defense of our uniforms, and is all in fun so I hope it is taken that way. On a side note, I am a fan of the old Padres uniforms.
