County Republicans hold golf tournament

On July 12, the Jasper County Republican Party held a golf tournament at Cardinal Golf and Swim Club in Newton.

The Tournament Chairman Ron Helms said that comfortable temperatures and great weather helped to fill 40 player slots for the tournament. Each participant in the tournament received a back pack of golf related items.

On the seventh hole, a Newton Senior High School golf team member was enlisted to drive for participants, if they so desired, for $5. Proceeds from that will be donated to the NHS golf team.

The first-place team was Lonnie Portner, James Moon, Andy George and Cappy McCormick; second-place team, Amy Chen, Julie Goad, Mark Schell and Dan Cohen; and third-place team, Jeanne Hershey, Harriet Harmilink, Corrine Hadley and Kay Gause. Devin Shores was the winner of the closest to the pin and the longest putt. But the highlight of the day was Andy George’s hole-in-one on the fourth hole.
