Boy bitten by dog near Mid-Iowa Motel

A 7-year-old boy was bitten on the lip by a dog on Wednesday at 4:05 p.m. at the Mid-Iowa Motel.

The dog’s owner, Alexandria Herring, 28, and the boy who was bitten were reported to have known each other but are not related. The two were walking the dog when Herring let the boy walk the dog, and then it bit him. Lt. Wes Breckenridge with Newton Police Department said it was unclear what transpired to excite the dog when the dog was being exchanged between Herring and the boy.

“There’s not an immediate relation that I’m aware of,” Breckenridge said. “But it sounds like the families knew each other. It’s not like a total stranger.”

The boy’s injuries were minor, and he was treated and released that day. Breckenridge also said the dog had proper dog-tags, was licensed and the owner was using a leash.

Breckenridge said there is no potential for charges in the future since the owner was following all proper procedures.
