Area Roundup: C-M blows by Colo-Nesco, 7-1

The Colfax-Mingo Tigerhawks put together two strong innings on the offensive end late in the game to surge past Colo-NESCO for the 7-1 victory.

Up 1-0 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Tigerhawks chipped away for two runs to take a 3-0 lead.

Four more runs in the bottom of the sixth put the game out of reach, and a late-inning run by the away team was inconsequential.

Juan Gonzales started and got the win for C-M. Gonzales pitched all seven innings, giving up just one unearned run and striking out seven batters.

Offensively, the big boost was provided by shortstop Jake Alexander, who’s three-run home run in the sixth inning pretty much sealed the deal for the Tigerhawks. Alexander had two hits in three at-bats.

Connor Hainer drove in a run and stole two bases. Trent Pease had a run scored and a stolen base with two walks. Gonzales had a hit, a run scored, an RBI and two stolen bases to go along with his strong performance on the mound.

Mustangs outlast Carlisle

The Prairie City-Monroe baseball team hosted Carlisle on Thursday, and the Mustangs came away with the 5-3 victory.

PCM scored the first two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead, but Carlisle answered with two runs of its own in the top of the third to tie the score.

Two runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth were too much to handle, though, and the Mustangs shut down Carlisle for the last two innings to secure the win.

Keith Timmons got the win for PCM. He pitched all seven innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits and one walk.

Clay Cooper, Alex DeWitte and Austin Brown each had solo RBI for the Mustangs. Brown doubled in three at-bats. Ethan Kain and Nathan VandeWall each doubled, as well.

Hawks softball wins again

The Lynnville-Sully softball team took a road trip out to Urbandale on Thursday, and it came back with a souvenir — a 6-1 win over Des Moines Christian.

The Hawks fell behind 1-0 in the first, but two runs in the fourth coupled with four seventh-inning runs put the Hawks on top for the victory.

Madison Rasmusson got the win, going all seven innings. She gave up just the one run in the first, and she struck out seven batters.

Offensively, the team was led by Jade Van Rees, who had two RBI on a base hit. Becca Vos and Shelby Davis chipped in RBI also.
