Butterfly count at Neal Smith NWR

The Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge invites the public to its free annual butterfly count from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 14.

Volunteers of all skill levels and experience are welcome. During the count, a naturalist and other butterfly experts will guide volunteers around a paved, two-mile trail and teach participants the intricate differences between butterflies found on the prairie. Participants will record the species and numbers of butterflies to help track butterfly populations.

Volunteers are urged to wear comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen and bring a reusable water bottle. To register, contact Megan Wandag at megan_wandag@fws.gov or (515) 994-3400.
