Area Roundup: Ballard snaps L-S win streak

After piecing together an impressive 16-game winning streak, and dominating much of the way, the Lynnville-Sully softball team lost to Ballard at home on Friday night, 6-2.

Sophomore pitcher Madison Rasmusson had her least consistent outing of the season, and the Hawks’ offense was held in check. The two runs tie for the Hawks’ lowest total of the season.

Rasmusson pitched all seven innings. She struck out six Bombers, but she also allowed 12 hits and six runs, walking three. The loss was Rasmusson’s fourth of the season. She has all four of the team’s losses on her record.

The normally potent Hawk bats were stifled by the Bombers, and the team only picked up two hits on the night. Rasmusson went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base. Shelby Davis had the other hit and run scored. She was also the only Hawk hitter with an RBI.

Although L-S suffered their first loss in almost three weeks, the team bounced back right away, winning its tournament in Marshalltown on Saturday.

The Hawks’ first game came against BCLUW, and L-S won in a slugfest, 10-7.

Although Rasmusson struggled in this game as well, she bounced back late and pitched the last two frames without allowing a run to cross the plate.

The Hawks’ eight runs in the third inning pretty much put this game away, despite a late charge by the Comets. Becca Vos and Brenna Lanser tied for the team lead with two hits. Vos also doubled. Davis had a hit and a walk, scoring both times she reached base. Jade Van Rees and Lasandra James each had an RBI for the Hawks, with James’ coming on a double.

In the second game of the day, the Hawks picked up a win over the Trojans of South Tama, 6-2.

Emma Schnell pitched the first 5.2 innings and was credited with the win. She gave up two earned runs on six hits. Rasmusson came on for the remaining out.

Van Rees drove in three of the Hawks’ six runs on a base hit in two at-bats. Kristal Beyer, Shaylin Lukehart and Kasiah Ehresman each had two hits to tie for the team lead. Lukehart drove in a run. Vos had the final RBI for L-S, driving in a run with a double.

Tigerhawks win at Greene County, fall in tournament

Colfax-Mingo’s baseball team went 2-1 on the weekend, pulling out a Friday night victory at Greene County, but the Tigerhawks lost both of their games at the Twin Cedars tournament on Saturday.

The win over Greene County was thanks to an early offensive explosion by the Tigerhawks’ offense, who put nine runs on the board before a Ram player crossed home plate. C-M won, 11-5.

The top of the order led the charge for the C-M offense. Seniors Trent Pease and Jake Alexander each had two hits and three RBI. Fellow senior Connor Hainer had two hits, scored four runs and drove in a run in his four at-bats. Hainer also stole three bases and walked.

Caleb Anderson got the victory, pitching 5.2 innings and giving up five runs on eight hits. Alexander finished off the remaining 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit and no runs.

C-M had a rude awakening on Saturday, when the team traveled to Twin Cedars for a tournament and lost to the host-Sabers, 19-1.

The game was finished after three innings. The Sabers scored four runs in the first, nine runs in the second and six in the third to walk away with the easy four-inning victory.

The Tigerhawks also lost their second game Saturday to the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Rockets, 5-3, in eight innings.

C-M got out to an early 3-0 lead, but the Tigerhawks were held scoreless the rest of the way, and they lost after the Rockets rallied for a run in the seventh and two runs in the eight inning.

CMB softball goes 1-2

for the weekend

The Collins-Maxwell/Baxter softball team traveled to Nevada on Friday night, and it nearly came home with a victory. The Raiders trailed by three runs heading into the top of the seventh inning, but they sparked a rally. The team came up one run short of completing the comeback, however, losing to Cubs, 7-6.

Cheyanne Warne took the loss for CMB, going all six innings and surrendering seven runs on 10 hits and three walks. Warne also struck out three Cub batters.

Freshman second baseman Payge Jurgens led the team with two RBI. She homered and singled in three at-bats, scoring two runs.

Cortney Ubben had two hits and a run scored. Sophomore catcher Abby Applegate also had two hits, one of which was a double. Mackenzie Schmitz and Megan Ritter had the other two RBI for the Raiders.

On Saturday, the Raiders hosted a tournament, and they came away with one win on their home field.

That win was against the Northeast Hamilton Trojans. Warne picked up the win in this one, going all seven innings against the Trojans. Warne allowed two earned runs and picked up eight strikeouts. She also went 1-for-4 at the plate with an RBI.

Schmitz had two hits in three at-bats, the highlight being an RBI triple. She also scored two runs. Ritter led the team with four hits — all singles — in four at-bats with an RBI. Jurgens walked twice and scored a run.

The second game was not so fortunate to the Raiders, who lost a nail-biter to Madrid, 2-1.

Eighth grader Heather Jessen took the loss for the Raiders, despite not allowing any earned runs. She allowed two unearned runs on six hits in six innings of work.

The Raiders only had one player reach base via the base hit. Schmitz went 2-for-3 with a run scored, but the remainder of the CMB order was send away without a hit. Mikayla Eslinger had a walk in her three plate appearances,

Mustangs fall to Hawks

The Prairie City-Monroe baseball team traveled to South Hamilton on Friday, and it came home with one more added to the loss column. The Mustangs lost to the Hawks, 7-0.

Senior Alex DeWitte took the loss for the Mustangs. He pitched the first four innings, giving up three runs on seven hits while getting five strikeouts. Sophomore Chase Keuning came on in relief. He gave up four runs — all in the fifth inning — in two innings of work.

Senior Nathan VandeWall led the team with two hits, both singles. Ethan Kain and Zach Uhlenhopp had the other to PCM hits. Ron Marshall walked twice.
