Cards dealt perfect game, lose at Norwalk in five innings

NORWALK — Sometimes no matter what a team does, it’s just not their day. The Newton softball team faced that hasrsh reality on Wednesday afternoon when it traveled to Norwalk.

The Cardinals came out energetic and ready to play, but their enthusiasm was quickly stifled by the Warriors. The Cardinals failed to get one runner on base in the five innings of play, losing by a score of 10-0.

Ashton Hoffman started the game in the circle for Newton, she battled for quite a while, but the lack of offense was too much for her to overcome.

The Warriors started the scoring in the bottom of the first. After a walk, a bunt single and a stolen base, a groundout made the game 1-0.

The game stayed 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Warriors broke things open. Following back-to-back singles, Hoffman got two flyouts, but a two-out walk loaded the bases for Norwalk. A bloop single that dropped just fair behind first base brought home two more runs. A wild pitch made the game 4-0.

Hoffman walked the next batter, and a double to center field extended the Warriors’ lead to 6-0. A single to left center field capped off the six-run inning.

The bottom of the fifth is when the Warriors would put the game away for good. A double scorched down the left field line led things off. Hoffman then hit a batter, and a walk loaded the bases once again. A wild pitch made the score 8-0. The batter then tripled to end the game.

The loss was the seventh straight for the Cardinals, who will host Pella Christian on Friday night.
