Big bike show, ‘no rules’ drag racing on tap at Iowa Grand Motorcycle Rally

An impressive array of motorcycles on display in one of the region’s largest bike shows, along with “no-rules” heads-up motorcycle drag racing will be among the highlights of the second annual Iowa Grand Motorcycle Rally, scheduled for Thursday, May 30, through Sunday, June 2, at the Iowa Speedway in Newton.

The ‘IGR Bike Show,’ presented by Handy Motorcycle Lifts, will be on display near the Rally concert stage on Saturday, June 1, featuring street bikes, customs and exotic fabrication of two and three-wheeled machinery.

“There’s something for everybody to admire at Handy’s ‘IGR Bike Show’,” said Iowa Speedway CEO Doug Fritz.  “From sport and touring bikes to antiques and custom trikes, this incredible display of motorcycle art is going to be a highlight of our Rally.”

According to Fritz, the J&P Cycles “No Rules Drags” on Saturday is designed to let riders challenge each other and themselves on Iowa Speedway’s 500-foot all-concrete dragstrip without a lot of technical detail imposed.

“This is old-school drag racing for bikers,” Fritz explained.  “It’s ‘run what ya brung,’ with no timing system and no rules.  Just a lot of fun going full throttle down the track.  And, thanks to J&P Cycles, it’s included in the Saturday Rally ticket.”

Other special attractions at the Iowa Grand Motorcycle Rally include the Big Barn Harley-Davidson “demo rides” on featured Harleys, while Big Barn service techs stand by to answer questions and offer advice to Harley enthusiasts, and the “Budweiser Bar Tent” on the north end of the concourse, where cold beer and other popular beverages will be in ample supply.

Individual ticket prices for the 2013 Iowa Grand Motorcycle Rally are $20 for Friday, May 31 ($25 with a rider), and $25 for Saturday, June 1 ($30 with a rider).  Two-day tickets are available for $40, or $50 with a rider, while the Thursday and Sunday activities are free and do not require a ticket.

Tent camping is free in designated areas, while RV’s are $50 per site with no utility hook-ups, and $150 with water/electric included, for the four days.  Vendor spaces are still available, as well as advertising and sponsorship opportunities for businesses catering to the motorcycle marketplace.
