DES MOINES (AP) — The Des Moines City Council has approved the design plan for a downtown redevelopment project that includes renovation of Nollen Plaza.
At Monday’s council meeting, members also approved a $400,000 development grant for the project.
The renovation includes the plaza, the Civic Center, Stoner Theater and Temple Theater. The overall construction costs are estimated at about $8 million, with $1 million more for public art. Organizers hope to raise $2 million more for operation and maintenance endowment.
The new plaza design includes a red carpet that would run from the west side of the plaza to the Civic Center.
Construction is expected to begin this summer and take a year.
