All gave some. Some gave all. And now, some are just looking to get a little something back for their service to their country.
Hiring Our Heroes, a three-year-old program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation launched as a nationwide initiative to help veterans and military spouses fund meaningful employment, will visit Newton next month. The goal is to find as many jobs for unemployed veterans and military spouses as possible.
“Working with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s vast network of state and local chambers and other strategic partners from the public, private, and non-profit sectors, our goal is to create a movement across America in hundreds of communities where veterans and military families return every day,” the organization’s website states. “Hiring Our Heroes has hosted more than 430 hiring fairs in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. Through [the end of 2012], more than 18,400 veterans and military spouses had obtained jobs.”
The Hiring Our Heroes Job Fair in Newton will be held 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at the DMACC Conference Center in Newton. Employers who participate must have immediate openings to fill. Prospective employees must be veterans, active duty military, members of the National Guard or Reserve components or military spouses.
Both groups can register for the event, free of charge, by visiting http://HOH.Greatjob.net. Walk-ins may be welcomed, but only registered participants are guaranteed admission.
In addition to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the hiring event is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor Veterans’ Employment and Training Service, the Iowa Committee of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, IowaWORKS, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, The American Legion, NBC News, and other local partners.
