Early child care symposium May 11

A Jasper County Early Care and Education Symposium is planned for from 8:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at the DMACC Newton Campus.

The goal of the symposium is to educate adults who work with children and families so they will better understand the sexual development of children and learn how to respond to children’s sexuality in ways that are healthy. Participants will increase awareness about healthy sexuality and child sexual abuse prevention.

The classes also will help participants understand which behaviors are normal, which behaviors are more concerning, and which behaviors need to be reported. The classes also informs participants of what to do if they suspect a child has been sexually abused or what to do when a child discloses that they are being sexually abused .

Registration begins at 8 a.m. the day of the event. Completion of the symposium qualifies as six hours of Department of Human Services approved training credit. For more information, call (641) 792-KIDS (5437) or contact Denice Fischer, program coordinator, by email at fischerd@iastate.edu.
