Newton man charged for assault with hammer

A Newton man is in jail for allegedly attacking another man with a hammer.

Daniel J. Jensen, 50, has been charged with first-degree burglary and going armed with intent, both Class B felonies, for allegedly entering a residence in the 5000 block of county blacktop S74 without permission and striking the occupant in the head with a blue-handled Estwing claw hammer.

The incident was reported at 5:21 p.m. Tuesday. The 55-year-old victim told deputies Jensen said, “This will teach you for messing with my family,” before striking him once on the left side of the head, causing a laceration and blood loss.

The victim said Jensen left the scene on foot. Authorities located and arrested Jensen at 5:49 p.m. at 600 E. Fourth St. N. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail and is being held on a $10,000 bond. The victim refused medical treatment.
