PCM basketball teams go 3-0 in weekend action
The Prairie City-Monroe girls basketball team picked up two victories between Friday and Saturday, while the boys earned a close on Friday in conference action.
The Mustang girls (9-6, 8-5 Heart of Iowa Conference), extended their win streak to five games with a 53-36 Friday victory over Roland-Story and a 56-43 nonconference win over Pella on Saturday. With the Friday win, the Mustangs moved up to fourth in the conference standings and are just one game behind third.
PCM’s boys (14-1, 11-1) also extended their win streak to five games with a 44-40 nailbiter over Roland-Story Friday night. The Mustangs trailed 26-23 at haltime, then held the Norsemen to just four points in the third quarter and eeked out the victory in the fourth.
Senior Ethan Kain led PCM with 11 points, while fellow senior Nate Vande Wall and junior Dillon Bruxvoort each finished with nine. Senior Michael Neff added six, freshman Logan Gilman had five and senior Alex DeWitte finished with four on top of a team-high six rebounds.
Both PCM teams will host Colfax-Mingo in Monroe on Tuesday.
Hawk boys dismantle HLV, girls lose tight one
The boys of Lynnville-Sully (12-2) ran away with their game at HLV (3-10) Friday Night, winning handily 57-23. The result was never in doubt as the Lynnville-Sully Hawks dominated from the opening tip and led 31-11 at half. HLV could not have imagined a worse night from the floor, only making nine of their 46 shots for a 19.6 percentage.
“I thought we did a lot of nice things offensively tonight,” Hawks Coach Nick Harthoorn remarked. “We ran the floor hard, moved the ball sharply and crashed the offensive boards. Our defense was pretty solid as well.”
Senior Nathan Russell led all scorers with 17 points to go along with seven rebounds. The Hawks look to keep momentum going on Tuesday when they host Belle Plaine.
The Lynville-Sully Hawks (10-6) fell to the Warriors of HLV (3-12) in a shocker Friday night, losing the road game 34-32. The Hawks led 17-9 at half, but the Warriors came out on a tear in the thrid quarter, scoring 16 points to Lynnville-Sully’s eight. HLV proceeded to win the fourth quarter and steal the win from the much more highly touted Hawks.
Hawks sophomore Lysandra James put together an impressive stat line of 11 points, 15 rebounds, three assists and four steals. Her perfomance was not able to offset the impressive showing by Abby Schafbuch whose 18 points led all scorers.
The Hawks will try to bounce back on Tuesday when they return home to face Belle Paine.
Colfax-Mingo downed by South Hamilton shooters
The Tigerhawks of Colfax Mingo (3-12) got declawed by the Hawks of South Hamilton (8-6) on Friday Night, falling 67-50. The Tigerhawks were unable to contain South Hamilton’s junior Matt Hislop. Hislop’s 21 points on an efficient six for nine shooting combined with senior John Hegland’s 19 points allowed the Hawks to surge past their competition in the second half.
Despite being down just seven at the intermission, the Tigerhawks came out flat as could be in the third quarter, which is when South Hamilton caught fire from beyond the artch. Hislop pocketed five three-balls and junior Trevor Ullestad drained four to make for a deadly combination of outside shooters that the Tigerhawks couldn’t hope to keep up with.
Colfax Mingo will head to PCM on Tuesday for another go in conference play.
