Big Brothers Big Sisters: January is Mentoring Month
SIDEBAR 1: 'Big' Statistics
Researchers found that after 18 months of spending time with their Bigs, the Little Brothers and Little Sisters, compared to those children not in our program, were:
• 52% less likely to skip school
• 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
• 37% less likely to skip a class
• 33% less likely to hit someone
• 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
SIDEBAR 2: Baker recognized for mentoring services
Rita Baker of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jasper County was recently recognized for her work in the local youth mentoring program. She received a certificate of appreciation signed by Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds.
"The State of Iowa hereby acknowledges Rita Baker for helping ensure a brighter future for children and youth across the state by serving as a dedicated mentor with the certified mentoring program Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jasper County," the certificate states.
