Mustangs host Hawks, Tigerhawks at home tourney

MONROE — It was a busy day for wrestling in Jasper County on Saturday, as Prairie City-Monroe hosted county schools Colfax-Mingo and Lynnville-Sully among many others part of the Mustang Invitational.

Knoxville topped the 12-team field in the competition that included three active mats in two areas of the school. PCM finished fourth in the field with 140.5 points, while Lynnville-Sully took seventh with 98.5 and Colfax-Mingo was 11th with 53.

The Mustangs placed 13 out of their 15 wrestlers in the field, led by senior Blake Sidie’s second-place finish at 220 pounds. Sidie earned his spot in the finals by pinning Knoxville’s Zayne Chapman, but then fell victim to Saydel’s Tyler Stocker in the finals.

Earning hard-fought third-place finishes for PCM were sophomore Ron Marshall (182) and junior Lukas Rains (195), who each went 3-1 on the day. All three of Marshall and Rains’ victories were pins, as were each of their defeats by Knoxville wrestlers.

Five Mustangs finished fourth in their respective weight classes, including sophomore Tristan Clark (126), junior Ian Reed (145), sophomore Jade Coleman (152), sophomore Dakota Timmins (170) and sophomore Trent Malone (285). Each wrestler recorded two victories for those finishes with the excpetion of Malone, who only wrestled three matches instead of four.

Other placings for PCM included fifth for freshman Reece Broderson (106), sophomore Skyler Koder (138) and junior Luke Cummings (160) and sixth for freshman Hunter Reed (145).

Lynnville-Sully

Short four wrestlers, the Hawks still managed to top some similarly-sized schools and finish in the middle of the pack.

Senior Shane Thompson led the team with a second-place finish at 285, while freshman Shannon Dunsbergen took third in the same weight as part of the JV All-Stars team.

Four other Hawks grabbed third-place finishes on the day including Colton Roorda (106), Austin Newell (132), Meliek Meyer (145) and Caden Doll (160). Jamison Goodyk (126) and Levi Bennington (152) each finished seventh, while Payton Scandridge (138) and Noah Zylstra (170) rounded out the Hawks’ field with eighth-place finishes.

“As a team we didn’t wrestle the best today, but there was some very good competition in some weight classes,” Hawks coach Steve Northcutt said. “We did finish higher than other 1A schools, but we had a few matches we should have won.”
