PCM boys hoops splits weekend games

After suffering its first overall and conference loss on Friday, the Prairie City-Monroe boys basketball team rebounded with a nonconference victory on Saturday.

The Mustangs (10-1, 7-1) fell to Nevada in conference action, 55-46, on Friday, but traveled to Pella and earned a 64-52 victory over the Dutch to round out their weekend record the next night.

In the victory over the Dutch, PCM was led by the senior trio of Alex DeWitte, Hunter Van Veen and Michael Neff, which scored 16, 15 and 12 points, respectively. Fellow senior Nate Vande Wall and junior Dillon Bruxvoort each scored six, junior Zach Uhlenhopp had five and freshman Logan Gilman contributed four. Neff completed a double-double in the game by also pulling down 10 rebounds to lead the team.

PCM trailed 15-10 after the first quarter, but managed a big run in the second and third to lead 47-31going into the fourth.

In girls basketball, PCM also lost to Nevada on Friday night, 52-38, dropping the Mustang girls to 5-6 overall and 4-5 in the conference. Both teams will be in action at home against Gilbert on Tuesday.

Lynnville-Sully splits Friday games with Sigourney

The Lynnville-Sully girls basketball team earned a close victory, while the Hawk boys were dealt a tough defeat in a doubleheader at Sigourney Friday night.

The Hawk girls (8-4, 7-4 South Iowa Cedar League) defeated Sigourney 33-31, holding off a late Savage rally in the process. Sophomore Lyssandra James led the team with 13 points, while junior Cassie Cullen had seven and fellow junior Rachel Van Wyk had six. L-S led 28-21 at the end of the third, but only scored three points in the fourth.

The Hawk boys (8-2, 8-1) had a seven-game win streak snapped with their 58-50 loss to the Savages. Junior TJ Cunningham certainly did his part, scoring a robust 19 points to lead the team. Senior Nathan Russell just missed double figures with nine, while fellow senior Cale Van Wyk had seven.

Both Hawk teams will take on Iowa Valley at home tonight.

Raider hoops swept by Norsemen in Story City

Both Collins-Maxwell-Baxter basketball teams suffered defeats on the road Friday night, as the Raider boys fell to Roland-Story 71-42 and the girls were defeated 53-38.

For the Raider boys (3-8. 2-8 Heart of Iowa Conference), sophomore Bryce Kemp and junior Austin Moorman each finished with 10 points, while sophomore Tommy Galloway contributed nine.

The Raider girls (4-9, 3-9) avenged the loss the following night when they defeated county foe Colfax-Mingo 44-35 in Colfax.
