Des Moines updating skywalk signs

DES MOINES (AP) — Des Moines has begun updating the signs that guide people using the downtown skywalk system.

The Des Moines Register reported that more than 160 signs will be replaced or altered to reflect changes that include the closing of the Younkers store.

Some of the new signs will include the distance between skywalk locations and whether a building has food or entertainment features.

Some signs will show skywalkers what streets they’re crossing over, and others will display the hours of operation for certain skywalk sections.

City engineer Calvin Miller says the city expects to finish the $462,400 project before February. He says the last sign update occurred about 10 years ago.
