PCM basketball sweeps Norsemen Friday

The Prairie City-Monroe boys and girls basketball teams each earned big conference victories on Friday night, defeating Roland-Story in Story City.

The Mustang boys (6-0, 4-0 Heart of Iowa Conference) remained undefeated thanks to a 22-point effort (9-for-14 shooting) from junior Dillon Bruxvoort in their 67-43 win. Bruxvoort was joined in double digits by senior Alex DeWitte, who finished with 17.

Senior Ethan Kain scored eight points for PCM, freshman Logan GIlman had seven off the bench, senior Michael Neff contributed six and junior Zach Uhlenhopp rounded out the team’s scoring with five.

After a tough loss at Pella Christian last Thursday, the Mustang girls (3-4, 2-3) recovered in a big way with a 64-48 victory. PCM led 30-26 at halftime, then cruised with 34 points in the second half to Roland-Story’s 22.

Three Mustangs finished in double figures for scoring, led by sophomore Courtney Van Houweling’s 16. Junior Abbi Gilson contributed 14 points, while senior Kelsey Townsend had 13. Senior Krisha Houseman and sophomore Grace Telfer narrowly missed double digits with nine and eight points, respectively, while junior Lexi Kain finished with four.

Both PCM teams will travel to Colfax-Mingo on Tuesday.

Raiders earn first conference

It was a good night for Collins-Maxwell-Baxter basketball in Baxter Friday night, as the Raider boys earned their first conference win and the girls picked up their first conference and overall win.

Leading the Raider girls (1-7, 1-4 Heart of Iowa Conference) in their 42-32 victory over the Rams was senior guard Kayla Hennick, who finished with 15 points, and sophomore Lexi Breon, who had 13. Senior Shelby Berg added seven, sophomore MacKenzie Schmitz had four and junior Abbie Haupert had three. CMB led by five at halftime before stretching its lead out in the second half.

The Raider boys (2-3, 1-3) picked up their second win in three games with a 72-63 defeat of Greene County. Both Raider teams will travel to North Polk on Tuesday.

with Belle Plaine

One slow quarter broke the Lynnville-Sully girls basketball team’s four-game win streak Friday night, while the Hawk boys earned their second win in a row.

The Hawk girls (4-2, 3-2 South Iowa Cedar League) were outscored 12-3 in the first quarter by Belle Plaine, then couldn’t recover for the rest of the game. Junior Cassie Cullen and sophomore Lysandra James each had 10 points to lead the Hawks. Sophomores Madison Rasmusson and Shelby James finished with six and four points, respectively, while junior Becca Vos finished with three and junior Jade Van Rees had one.

With their 60-35 victory over the Plainsmen, the Hawk boys stayed undefeated in South Iowa Cedar Legue play at 3-0, while pushing their overall record to 3-1.

Hawk wrestling takes fifth

at weekend tourney

The Lynnville-Sully wrestling team took part in a tournament at Tri-County on Saturday, at which the Hawks brough home a fifth-place team finish with 81 points.

Seven Hawks brought home medals from the tournament, led by Cadel Doll’s second-place finish at 160 pounds. Malin Meyer took third at 120, while Meliek Meyer (145), Levi Bennington (152) and Noah Zylstra (170) all finished fourth. Rounding out the Hawks’ placing wrestlers were Cole Nickell (105) and Colten Roorda (113), who took fifth and sixth, respectively.

“It was very tough competion, so we’re very pleased with our finish,” Hawks coach Steve Northcutt said. “We’re not where we want to be yet, but are improving every time on the mat.”

The Hawks will host two events this week, taking on Colfax-Mingo and Southeast Warren on Tuesday, then welcoming in five teams for a tournament.

Colfax-Mingo basketball swept by South Hamilton

Despite strong performances from two seniors, neither Colfax-Mingo basketball team could come away with a road victory at South Hamilton Friday night.

Nicolette Husson continued her strong season for the Tigerhawk girls (1-5, 1-4 Heart of Iowa Conference) with 26 points and 10 rebounds in C-M’s 48-36 loss to the Hawks. C-M’s only other scores were freshman Jessica Albright with six points and senior Sydnie Farhney with four.

For the boys (1-4, 1-3), Vaughn Wilson dropped 27, but was out-scred by South Hamilton’s Josh Heglund with 28 points as the Hawks earned a 62-54 victory.

Wilson was joined in double figures by two of his teammates as senior Connor Hainer had 11 points and fellow senior Byron Johnson scored 10. Senior Austin Yoakum added five points, while senior Joe Taylor rounded out the scoring with one.

Both Colfax-Mingo teams will host PCM Tuesday night.
