Group exercises classes can add variety to your exercise program, and give you the opportunity to try new activities.

A class setting can also be motivating. People often find they can do more exercise as part of a group than on their own.

The instructor, participants, and the music can distract you from thinking about what you’d rather be doing. Best of  all, exercise classes can be fun when you find an activity and group that you enjoy.

Here are some things to consider when you are deciding what class to join.

Safety first

Be sure the class you take will not aggravate any health problems you may have. Be sure to understand any limitations you may have when exercising.

For example, are there certain exercises you should avoid because of back and knee issues? Be sure to discuss any of these potential limitations with your instructor.

Look for a class that is somewhat challenging, but not too difficult for you. Find a class that will challenge you but not push you over the edge.

Your health, fitness goals

Why are you considering enrolling in a fitness class? What do you want this class to do for you?

Are you looking for activities that will strengthen your muscles and joints? Improve your endurance? Lower your blood pressure?

If you’re new to exercise be sure to speak with a fitness professional to help you determine which class will be best for you.

Convenience, setting

You want your exercise class to become part of your daily routine, so you don’t even have to think about whether or not to go: going to class will simply be a habit. This will most likely happen if the class you join is in a convenient location and fits your schedule.

Take a class with a friend

Joining a class with a friend offers several advantages. Most important, its nice to spend time with a friend you would like to see more often.

Second, when you think of excuses to skip class, you may think twice when you know your friend is waiting for you.

Quality instruction

Look for instructors with years of experience and come recommended. Good instructors have plenty of energy and enthusiasm, and a great knowledge of the activities they are teaching.
