McKlveen Lumber Co. sold to Spahn & Rose

After 106 years in business in Jasper County, McKlveen Lumber Co. is being sold.

Tom McKlveen, president of McKlveen Lumber Co., has announced the acquisition of McKlveen’s Newton location by Spahn & Rose Lumber Co. The transfer of ownership will take place on Dec. 17.

“The sale to Spahn & Rose is a good fit for both McKlveen Lumber and Spahn & Rose,” McKlveen said. “As independent lumber dealers, both companies are dedicated to providing a high level of service to their customers while offering superior products at competitive prices.

“We have a great deal of respect for the way Spahn & Rose operates their lumber yards and believe the strong history and heritage of McKlveen Lumber’s presence in central Iowa will continue under new ownership.”

McKlveen indicated that the operations of the Newton location would change very little when ownership and operations transfer to Spahn & Rose in December.

McKlveen also thanked the company’s customers for their support over the 24 years since purchasing the Newton location from Watters Lumber Co.

McKlveen said he and his brother and co-owner Dick McKlveen will continue to work in the store on a full-time basis between now and Dec. 31, to assist in the transition to the new owners and to personally thank their longtime customers.

J.H. McKlveen & Co., the parent company of McKlveen Lumber, was founded in 1906 in Prairie City. Since that time, the company has been owned and operated by four generations of the McKlveen family.

Spahn & Rose Lumber Co. is headquartered in Dubuque, and has 26 locations in Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota. The independent lumber company was founded in 1904. The locations nearest to Newton are Tama, Knoxville and Marshalltown.
