Rock and Renew kicks off long-term beautification program in Newton

The Newton Housing and Development Corporation and Habitat for Humanity Mid-Iowa have teamed up for a new program in Newton. “Rock and Renew” Neighborhood Revitalization program is committed to supporting one of Newton’s top initiatives to address the concerns of the vision for Newton’s future.

“We want to partner with everyone in the community to collectively improve Newton’s curb appeal and be attractive,” said Janet Reents, NHDC director. “Rock and Renew is not a short-term solution, but rather an ongoing commitment to complete neighborhood improvements throughout the year that have a lasting positive impact.”

Reents said the program hopes to complete as many projects as will be permitted by its resources and capabilities. The first event is scheduled to start Oct. 21 and 22, focusing on the First Avenue corridor.

Rock and Renew will be actively soliciting for volunteers for a wide variety of skills. They are searching for not only experienced professionals but ordinary citizens who will work together on home and neighborhood improvement projects, such as exterior home repair and maintenance; landscaping maintenance; weatherization; clearing brush and other beautification projects.

Other ways residents can participate is by donating food for the volunteers, monetary contributions for supplies or material and equipment.

Residents interested in participating in the Rock and Renew program, or who would like more information, can call the Newton Housing Development Corp. at 641-792-6432, or visit the website www.rockandrenew.org.
