Hy-Vee and JCARL team up for pets

Newton Hy-Vee employees are putting their best feet (and paws) forward this month to help generate financial support for the Jasper County Animal Rescue League and Humane Society.

The “Paws for a Cause” campaign is being conducted now through Oct. 14, to coincide with Hy-Vee’s companywide “Big Pet Sale” promotion.

During the two-week campaign, Newton Hy-Vee cashiers will be selling paper “paws” at the register for $1 customer donation, all of which will go directly to benefit JCARL’s general operating expenses.

Jason Crocker, Hy-Vee Store Director, said the goal of the fall campaign is to sell at least 2,012 paws to generate needed funding for JCARL. If the goal is met, Crocker said Hy-Vee will contribute an additional $250 corporate donation to the shelter.

“We’re very proud to continue our great partnership with JCARL on this exciting event, not only to assist with its ongoing operational needs but also to offer our floor and heavy store traffic as a venue to create increased exposure for the shelter,” Crocker said.

In conjunction with the “Paws for a Cause” campaign, JCARL will have a small group of available dogs and cats at the Hy-Vee store from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

Also beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, the public is invited to bring their dogs and cats to a pet show at Hy-Vee Gas. The show will consist of multiple categories, including “Best Costume,” “Best Pet-Owner Look-alikes” and “Best Trick.”

JCARL also is hoping to continue the positive momentum it has built with its “Neuter or Spay a Stray” campaign. The focus of the campaign is to raise funding earmarked for altering animals at the Rescue League, reducing overall fees and making pet adoptions a more economical and appealing option for area residents.

Individuals or groups interested in making tax-deductible financial contributions to the "Neuter or Spay a Stray" program may send checks to JCARL, 5411 Liberty Ave., Newton IA 50208. For more information, call (641) 792-5407 or visit www.jcarl.org.
