On May 1, Gov. Terry E. Branstad signed a proclamation declaring the week of May 7 to 11 Senior Corps Week in Iowa. This was the first time that a governor’s proclamation had been issued in recognition of Senior Corps Week in Iowa. Program Directors and Senior Corps volunteers from throughout the state attended the ceremony. Senior Corps Week celebrates, recognizes and highlights the extraordinary contributions that RSVP, foster grandparents and senior companions volunteers make through service in their communities each and every day. At a time of mounting social needs and growing interest in service by older Americans, there is an unprecedented opportunity to harness the talents of 55-plus volunteers to address community challenges. If you are 55-plus and would like to be a part of a service organization that can have a positive impact on your community, call RSVP of Jasper County at (641) 792-6433. Those witnessing the signing of the proclamation and representing RSVP of Jasper County included Denice Fischer, RSVP director; Tanya Michener, RSVP program assistant; and RSVP volunteers Dr. Deloris Butler, Cecil Cumpton and Bill Harrison.
