Cards, Mustangs take second, fourth on Friday

TAMA — The Newton and Prairie City-Monroe girls track teams took part in a six-team invitational on Friday at South Tama County High School, where the Cardinals and the Mustangs placed second and fourth, respectively. It was the second meet at STC in 18 days for the Cardinals, who opened their season there on April 2.

Williamsburg won the meet with 208 points, Newton was the runner-up with 164, followed by Grinnell (132) and PCM (99).

The Cardinals only won one of the 19 events, but were able to take second at the meet by finishing as runner-up in 10 of them. They also took third in two, fourth in two and had four individuals take fifth.

Newton’s lone winner on the night was senior Courtney Meyer, who topped the discus competition with a toss of 112 feet, 3 inches. She also placed third in the shot put at 34-6. It was another strong meet for the Cardinals’ throwers, as freshman Sarah Kalkhoff took second to Meyer in the discus at 108-7 and sophomore Michaela Bleeker was second in the shot put at 35-7. Sophomore Madison Bagnall and Kalkhoff also placed first and second in the JV shot put with throws that would have placed seventh and eighth on varsity.

Senior Alora Simmons took second place in the high jump at a height of 4 feet, 10 inches, while the rest of Newton’s runner-up finishes came on the track. Individually, sophomore Amber Karsten and senior Ellen Colville took second in the 200 and 800-meter races in times of 27.41 seconds and 2:39.25, respectively, and freshman Anna Barr was second in the 400 hurdles in 1:10.85. Barr also took third in the high jump (4-10).

Newton also took second in four relays. They included the 4x400 team of Colville, sophomore Bailey Zaruba, Barr and Karsten 4:25.89; the 4x800 team of freshman Hailey Coy, senior Mariah Doland, sophomore Brooklynn Maddison and freshman Rachel Prendergast 11:21.44; the sprint medley team of senior Kyla Cazett, sophomore Kacy Cazett, junior Victoria Walton and freshman Taylor Fisher in 2:00.74; and the distance medley team of Walton, Karsten, Fisher and Colville in 4:34.54.

The Cardinals’ other top-five individual finishers were freshman Autumn Hunt and Doland taking fourth and fifth in the 3,000, Zaruba taking fifth in the 400; Walton taking fifth in the 100 hurdles and junior Amanda Richtsmeier taking fifth in the 400 hurdles.

Newton is at Grinnell on Tuesday.

PCM

PCM came away with six top-three finishes, including two victories. It won two events, took second in two, third in two and fourth in four.

Both wins were relays anchored by sophomore Lexi Kain. The 4x200 team of Mackenzie Clarke, Kelsey Townsend, Emma Williams and Kain won in 1:54.54, while the sprint medley team of Williams, Courtney Van Houweling, Clarke and Kain won in 1:58.56.

It was a nice night for Mustangs’ freshman Rachel Peter, who took second in the 3,000 in a season-best 11:51.61 and took third in the 1,500 in 5:38.64. PCM’s shuttle hurdle team of Shelby Palm, Kain, Williams and Townsend took second in 1:11.85, while Brilee McWilliams took third in the discus with a toss of 107 feet even.

“We were able to win two relays against some good teams,” Mustangs coach Joel Grier said. “Rachel Peter continues to improve her times in the distance races. We had 12 girls available for this meet and had five performances from all 12.”

Palm took fourth n the 100 hurdles, Townsend was fourth in the 400, while PCM also took fourth in two relays. The 4x100 team of Clark, Townsend, Williams and Kain finished in 53.97 seconds, while the 4x400 team of Clarke, Van Houweling, Palm and Abbi Gilson ran in 4:40.05.

Today, the Mustangs host fellow Jasper County schools Colfax-Mingo and Lynnville-Sully in the PCM girls classic at 5 p.m.
