Newton’s annual Relay for Life, the premier fundraising event for the American Cancer Society, is scheduled for Friday, June 1, at H.A. Lynn Stadium, but already residents and organizations are busy forming teams and raising money for the non-profit organization.

Event organizer Debby Pence said a number of groups already are planning special events to raise funds for the Relay for Life, and this year, folks will have a little extra incentive to raise money.

“Store For Homes has donated a $500 gift certificate in their store for the individual who raises the most money,” Pence said.

Other groups planning fundraisers include Loving Hands Daycare, who is selling Incredible Pizza gift cards for $10. Stepping Stones Daycare is selling hair bows. Medicap Pharmacy will be selling May baskets that can be ordered at their store, and proceeds will be donated to Relay for Life. Culver’s is holding a series of special events at their restaurant to raise funds.

The Relay for Life theme this year is “Star light, star bright, hope to find a cure tonight.” Pence said she currently has 30 teams registered for the event, and hopes to have 40 by June 1. A survivor walk will kick off the event at 6 p.m., followed by the team walk. Supper will be served at 6:30 p.m., and the events will continue until midnight. Pence said she is still working on entertainment.

“Anyone who has battled cancer, or who has had friends or family who has had cancer, knows how important it is to find a cure for this terrible disease,” Pence said. “Maybe someday we won’t have to have these fundraisers.”

Pence added that it’s not too late to form a team for Relay for Life. Contact Pence at (641) 792-6635, and she will get you a packet of information for your team.
