Potato bars abound this weekend

It’s clear that Newton is not suffering a potato famine, as there are three potato bars scheduled at area churches this weekend alone. Since St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner, start your Irish celebration early by creating your own potato bar crawl.

Start your crawl at First United Methodist Church, 210 N. Second Ave., in Newton, who will host a Firefighter Tribute Fundraiser from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at Newton area banks. Cost includes the potato bar, dessert and door prizes.

Still have a carb craving? Head over to Grace Church of Newton, 304 W. Fourth St. N., for another potato bar from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Freewill donations will be accepted to benefit the church’s youth.

Dig in to the starchy goodness yet again at First Presbyterian Church, 220 N. Second Ave. E., at the annual potato bar held after 10:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday. Enjoy baked potatoes with a variety of toppings, drinks and desserts. Freewill offerings will also be accepted.
