KIRKSVILLE, Mo. — Lori Ellen Griffin (left) and Jennifer Anne Herr (right), both of Newton, graduated as valedictorians from Truman State University during commencement ceremonies on May 8.

Griffin earned a bachelor of science degree and departmental honors in exercise science. While at the University, Griffin was a member of Cardinal Key national honor society.

Herr earned a bachelor of science degree in linguistics. While at the University, Herr was a member of Cardinal Key national honor society, Phi Kappa Phi national honor society recognizing superior scholarship and the Pershing Society, Truman’s honor society for academic and leadership excellence.

Charles J. McClain, the University’s long-time president, returned to give the commencement address and receive an honorary degree. His presidency spanned nearly 20 years, from 1970 to 1989, and his vision and leadership helped the school transform into Missouri’s only highly selective, public liberal arts and sciences university. As a result of McClain’s leadership, the University received national recognition for its academic excellence and assessment programs, including the G. Theodore Mitau Award for Innovation and Change in Higher Education, the highest award from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.

Founded in 1867, Truman State University has the highest graduation rate among all Missouri public institutions. More than 50 percent of Truman’s graduates pursue an advanced degree immediately upon graduating. Truman enrolls approximately 5,800 students. The university also was ranked one of the five most innovative colleges and universities in the country in a U.S. News & World Report survey of college and university presidents.
