Herman Bruxvoort, 91, the son of Dick and Hattie (Van Kampen) Bruxvoort, was born May 10, 1918, in Sully, Iowa. He was raised on the family farm just north of Sully and graduated from the Sully Christian School. Herman made his profession of faith at a young age in the Sully Christian Reformed Church.

On May 29, 1941, Herman was united in marriage with Cornelia “Kay” Boender in Oskaloosa, Iowa. They made their home on farms in the Sully, Peoria and Kellogg, Iowa, areas. Over the past 60 years, they have lived in the Newton area. After farming, Herman worked for Newton Wholesale for eight years and then for Gordon’s Wholesale for 22 years as a restaurant supplies salesman, and he was known as the “candyman,” retiring in 1987. He then worked 20 years at Hy-Vee as a greeter on a part-time basis. He really enjoyed meeting and greeting the customers there. Herman was a faithful member of the Newton Christian Reformed Church, having served as an elder, deacon, teacher and usher for many years. He truly enjoyed his family and friends, yard work, birds, his flowers, all nature, reading, baseball and traveling.

Herman went to be with his Lord on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, in the Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. The last of 11 children, Herman was preceded in death by his parents; seven sisters, Elizabeth (John) Slater, Nellie (Will D.) Van Wyk, Hattie (Arie) Olsthoorn, Jennie (Gerrit) Jochems, Effie Bruxvoort, Gertrude (Harold) Owen and Bernice (Gilbert) Meinders; his three brothers, Jake, Gerrit and Guy Bruxvoort; and a grandson-in-law, Carl Kulczyk.

Those left to honor the memory of Herman are his wife, Kay; his son, Donald (Theresa) Bruxvoort of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; two granddaughters, Jana (Brian) Van Haaften of Chaska, Minn., and Pam Kulczyk of Des Moines, Iowa; a grandson, Brian (Chris) Bruxvoort of Ypsilanti, Mich.; his six great-grandchildren, Tiffany and Reece Van Haaften, Caleb and Ezra Kulczyk and Ursula and Donovan Bruxvoort; many nieces and nephews; and his many neighbors and friends.

Herman was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and showed much affection for his family and church. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.pencefh.com.
