Marvin L. Simpson

Marvin L. Simpson, 79, of Newton died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007, at Park Centre Care Center in Newton. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Newton with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. A private family burial will be held at Newton Union Cemetery. Memorials may be designated to the First United Methodist Church in Newton or the Newton Masonic Lodge #59 AF and AM. Marvin was born to Rex and Daisy (Magg) Simpson on Sept. 11, 1928, in Prairie City. He graduated from Newton High School in 1947 and played semi-pro football for the Nighthawks team from Des Moines. He had a long career in the auto business, which started by working for Dale Schlotfeldt. He bought Dale’s business and renamed it “Key Oldsmobile”. He then moved to Waterloo and owned “Marv Simpson Dodge” and later moved to Clear Lake where he owned “Simpson Ford.” He was united in marriage with Mickey Mahon on June 19, 1949, in Newton. Marvin was a 51-year member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of Cedar Rapids Scottish Rite Bodies, El-Kahir Shrine in Cedar Rapids, the First United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of the Elk’s Lodge, the Cadillac Crest Club, served as president of the Iowa Automobile Dealers Assn. from 1875 to 1976, was on the Board of Directors for the Waterloo YMCA and was a long-time active member of the Newton and Waterloo YMCAs. He loved sports, especially football and enjoyed cheering for the University of Iowa and the Newton football teams. He is survived by his wife, Mickey Simpson of Newton; three daughters, Marlys (Don) Akin of Raleigh, N.C., Patricia Simpson of San Anselmo, Calif., and Connie (David) DeGracia of Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren, Brad Akin, Mitchell Akin, Lucas DeGracia and Bryce DeGracia; his mother, Daisy Simpson of Newton; one brother, Ronnie (Bette) Simpson of Indiana; and one sister, Reta (Jim) Miller of Wateroo. He was preceded in death by his father.*
