Shannon leads Mustang trio on 2A all-state football team

Fenton, Steenhoek also recognized by IFCA

The PCM football was ranked in the top five in Class 2A most of the season. The Mustangs finished one game short of another state semifinal appearance, but three players were recognized for their efforts this season.

The Iowa Football Coaches Association named sophomore Hayden Shannon to a the 2A first team, while seniors Keegan Fenton and Gavin Steenhoek both were second-team selections recently.

Shannon was a first team offensive lineman after helping the Mustangs rank tied for second in offensive touchdowns in 2A with 57.

PCM’s offense also was third in total yards with 4,335, third in rushing yards with 2,695 and third in rushing touchdowns with 37. Shannon was a second-team selection last season.

Fenton and Steenhoek scored all-state recognition for the first time. Fenton was a second-teamer as a defensive lineman and Steenhoek was recognized for his ability as returner.

Fenton led the Mustangs with 61 tackles. He also ranked tied for sixth in 2A with 18 tackles for loss and was fourth with nine sacks. His 54 solo tackles also ranked 15th in the class.

Gavin Steenhoek

Steenhoek’s 437 kickoff return yards were the sixth-most in 2A. He averaged 27.3 yards per return and was one of seven players to return two kickoffs for touchdowns.

Steenhoek averaged 6.9 yards on his 17 punt returns. That ranked third in the class.
