Cibula’s double-double helps Newton girls pull away from Chariton

Cardinals dominate second half in season opener

CHARITON — The Newton girls basketball team got a career night from Addy Cibula, and the Cardinals overcame a slow start during a 49-33 road win over Chariton on Tuesday.

Newton and the Chargers were tied at 21-all at halftime, but the visitors outscored Chariton 15-3 in the third and put the win on ice with a 13-9 advantage in the fourth.

It was Newton’s second straight win over Chariton, and the Cardinals are 8-4 in the series since 2008.

Cibula led the Cardinals with a career-high 13 points and a career-best 15 rebounds. Payton Carkhuff also scored in double figures, finishing with a game-high 14 points and adding two rebounds, two assists and three steals.

Tori White totaled eight points, six boards and five steals, Camryn Klein chipped in five points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals and Sophia Coady contributed five points, four rebounds and five steals.

Molly Meyer grabbed two rebounds and scored her first varsity points in her prep debut. Emerson Ray dished out two assists.

Newton (1-0) shot 40 percent from the floor, made 1-of-5 from 3-point range and buried 12-of-17 from the free-throw line.

The Cardinals out-rebounded the Chargers 33-24, swiped 17 steals and turned the ball over 17 times. They also were whistled for 11 more fouls (24-13).

Tatum Swarthout scored 12 points for Chariton, while Payton Snook totaled eight points, seven rebounds and five steals.

The Chargers (1-1) shot 22.2 percent from the floor, made 3-of-20 from 3 and connected on 14-of-24 at the foul line. They turned the ball over 17 times.
