MARSHALLTOWN — An eight-strike effort in her second game, including three straight strikes in the 10th frame, powered Gabbie Humphrey to a come-from-behind victory during the Newton bowling team’s season opener against Marshalltown on Tuesday.
The Cardinals downed the Bobcats, too, on their home lanes. Newton opened the Baker games with a pair of 176s and cruised past Marshalltown 2,095-1,590 at Wayward Social.
Newton led its hosts by more than 300 pins after the individual round and then extended its advantage after a 718-556 surplus in the Baker games.

Humphrey opened her season with a 138 but finished the day with a 205 to pull out the individual win. Her 343 defeated teammate Kelly Holmes by 48 pins.
Holmes opened with a 155 and finished with a 140 for a 295 series. Braleigh Slings led her squad after bowling a 166 in the opening game but fell to fourth following a 121 in the second game.
Aeris Archer (230) was seventh, Mackenna Burns (222) placed eighth and Lili Baxin (172) ended up 11th.
Archer rolled a 127 after a 103 in the opener. Burns posted a pair of 111s and Baxin rolled two 86s.

Marshalltown’s Bailey Damman moved up to third following a 168 in the second game. She finished with a 288 series.
The Cardinals dominated the first two Baker games winning 176-120 and 176-76. Both teams rolled a 128 in the third game, and Newton was six pins better in the final two games.
Humphrey’s 205 included eight strikes and two spars. She posted strikes on frames 1, 4, 6, 7 and 8 and then rolled three straight in the 10th.
Slings’ varsity debut score of 166 included a pair of back-to-back strikes and then a strike in the seventh frame.

Holmes’ 155 featured three strikes and three spares. She rolled back-to-back strikes in the eighth and ninth frame. Burns ended one of her 111 games with three straight strikes in the 10th.
In the first 176 of the Baker round, the Cardinals (1-0) rolled two strikes and eight spares. Humphrey also picked up a 2-10 split in the fifth frame.
The second 176 included three strikes and five spares. Newton posted consecutive strikes in the seventh and eighth frames.
