Baxter baseball cruises past Colo-NESCO

Bolts can’t hold lead in loss to North Tama

ZEARING — The Baxter baseball team broke open a close game with an eight-run sixth inning and cruised past Colo-NESCO 13-3 during an Iowa Star Conference South Division game on Friday.

The Bolts trailed the Royals 3-2 after five frames but scored eight in the sixth and three in the seventh to win easily.

Baxter had only seven hits but stole seven bases, walked seven times and was hit by eight pitches. The Bolts also committed two errors.

Cael Wishman led the offense with three hits, Cael Shepley added a pair of hits and Jake Travis was hit by four pitches.

Wishman scored two runs, totaled three RBIs, doubled and stole one base, Shepley collected two runs, one RBI and one steal and Cody Damman and Kolton Hill each registered one hit, one run, one RBI and one walk.

Damman also was hit by a pitch, Hill stole one base and Travis scored two runs and stole one base.

Perrin Sulzle walked three times, scored two runs and stole one base, Trevor Hamilton was hit by three pitches, scored two runs and stole one base and Colton Moffit drew four walks. James Esqueda also walked once, scored one run, stole one base and drove in one run.

Shepley started on the mound but got the no-decision after allowing three runs — one earned — on three hits in 3 2/3 innings. He also struck out three, walked two and hit two batters.

Moffit got the win in relief. He surrendered no earned runs on three hits and struck out four, walked one and hit two batters in 3 1/3 innings.

North Tama 7, Baxter 5

BAXTER — The Bolts couldn’t hold a narrow lead against North Tama during an Iowa Star Conference South Division battle on Wednesday.

Baxter scored first and led 3-2 through five innings but allowed a five-run sixth to the Redhawks and lost 7-5. The Bolts scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough.

Both teams had six hits, but the Bolts committed four errors and most of them came in the five-run sixth.

Damman started on the mound and took the loss after allowing six runs — two earned — on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out six, walked six and hit two batters.

At the plate, Travis led the Bolts (3-3, 1-2) with two doubles, four RBIs and one walk. Ben Richardson and Damman each had one hit, two runs and one walk.

Damman’s hit was a triple, Shepley doubled, walked once and had one RBI, Esqueda had one hit and one run, Wishman walked once and Sulzle stole one base.

Moffit got five outs in relief of Damman. He allowed no runs on one hit and struck out two.

Josh Dostal led North Tama with one hit, one run and two RBIs and he pitched into the seventh for the victory.

GMG 11, Baxter 5

GARWIN — The Bolts struggled on the mound and in the field during an 11-5 road loss to GMG on May 22.

Baxter fell behind 3-0 after one inning and never recovered. GMG added four in the fifth and three in the sixth to pull away.

The Bolts were out-hit 18-9 and they committed four errors.

Seven Baxter players had at least one hit. Damman and Shepley each registered two hits, one double and one run scored.

Shepley added one RBI, two walks and two steals and Damman stole one base. Travis collected one hit, one run and was hit by a pitch, Moffit finished with one hit and two RBIs and Aiden Johnson tallied one hit, one RBI and one stolen base.

Sulzle registered one hit and one run, Wishman walked once and was hit by a pitch, Esqueda recorded one hit, Hill drew a walk and Cole Frasher scored one run.

Shepley was given the pitching loss after firing four innings and allowing six runs — five earned — on six hits with eight strikeouts, three walks and two hit batters.

Sulzle also tossed two innings and surrendered five runs — three earned — on six hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Kaleb Gill led Wolverines with four hits, two runs and two RBIs. Colin Teske pitched into the sixth inning and got the win after allowing three earned runs and striking out four.
