Newton boys find success in relays at LHC Indoor meet

Short-handed Cardinals return to Grinnell College

GRINNELL — The Newton boys track and field team is still waiting to be at full strength this season.

But several Cardinals got their feet wet this week and the experience ended at the Little Hawkeye Conference meet at Grinnell College on Thursday.

Newton found some success in relays and three Cardinals scored top-six finishes in individual events during a meet that did not keep team points.

They were fourth in the shuttle hurdle, 4x200 and distance medley relays.

In the shuttle hurdle, the team of Curtis Payne, Caden Klein, Cade Bauer and Reilly Trease placed fourth with a time of 39.64 seconds.

Wyatt Weter and Eli Stewart both were in the distance medley and 4x200 relays.

In the distance medley relay, the team of Weter, Stewart, Cole Walter and Javin Doland finished fourth in 4 minutes, 8.02 seconds.

The foursome of Nathan Milburn, Christian Ergenbright, Weter and Stewart placed fourth in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:40.71.

Trease, Klein and Ergenbright all placed in the top six in an individual event. Trease led the way with a fifth-place finish in the 60-meter dash as he stopped the clock in 7.39 seconds. Klein (2:12.21) took sixth in the 800 and Ergenbright (23.81) ended up sixth in the 200.
