Newton girls dominate field at Tigerhawk Indoor Relays

Colfax-Mingo recognizes eight seniors at Grinnell College

GRINNELL — The Newton girls’ track and field team had enough depth to qualify two different shuttle hurdle relay teams for the state meet last year.

This season doesn’t appear to be much different as the Cardinals finished 1-2 in the event at the Tigerhawk Indoor High School Relays at Grinnell College on Tuesday.

Newton won 10 events total and placed second nine times. The Cardinals also were 1-2 in four events and claimed wins in four relays.

The shuttle hurdle relay teams were separated by just .63 seconds at the top of the standings. Defending Class 3A state champion Addy Terpstra also won the 60-meter hurdles.

Terpstra anchored Newton’s ‘A’ shuttle hurdle relay team to a win. The foursome also included Macy Lampe, Gracie Clayton and Chloe Rorabaugh and they finished in 41.02 seconds.

The ‘B’ team of Tori White, Mack Sims, Annie Main and Alyssa Beerends finished second in 41.65.

Baxter also attended what is expected to be Colfax-Mingo’s lone home meet of the season. The Tigerhawks held Senior Night halfway through the meet. Colfax-Mingo recognized seniors Carley Underwood, Caylee Cunningham, McKenna Pleima, Felicity Woods, Holland Robinette, Joslyn Dawson, Addi Mayes and Ashley Purk.

Underwood had the best night for the Tigerhawks. She was the runner-up to Terpstra in the 60 hurdles, anchored C-M to third in the shuttle hurdle relay and was part of the second-place distance medley relay team.

Baxter earned two wins on the night. Both of those came from Mandee Selover as she won the long jump and 200 dash.
