L-S girls fall short of upset against No. 12 North Mahaska

Hawks rally in fourth, can’t finish off win against rival Warhawks

SULLY — The Lynnville-Sully girls basketball team had the ball in its hands with a chance to win or tie in the final seconds against Class 1A No. 12 North Mahaska on Friday.

The Hawks missed a potential game-tying bucket late in the final frame and then overcame a few second-chance opportunities by North Mahaska before eventually falling short 49-47 at home during a South Iowa Cedar League contest between two of the top three teams in the league.

“What a heck of a game by the girls,” Lynnville-Sully head girls basketball coach Jerry Hulsing said. “Tonight the ball just didn’t bounce our way, but we had chances to pull it out. Rebounding and unforced turnovers are what hurt us tonight.”

The Hawks led 10-9 after one quarter but were outscored 18-9 in the second and 17-12 in the third. The home team rallied with a 16-5 fourth frame, but L-S was plagued by 25 turnovers.

“So proud of the heart the girls showed tonight,” Hulsing said. “We could have very easily packed it in, but they fought back and gave us a chance.”

Majesta Vos had 14 points, six rebounds and two blocks to lead the Hawks, while Greenlee Smock added 11 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Kate Harthoorn finished with seven points, three rebounds and three blocks, Aubree Arthur tallied six points and three boards and Tatum Huyser registered four points, three rebounds and four assists.

Alaina Roberts finished with three points, three rebounds and two assists.

The Hawks (13-6 overall, 10-4 in the SICL) shot 56 percent from the floor, made 3-of-8 from 3-point range and connected on 8-of-11 from the free-throw line. L-S had a 16-7 advantage in bench points.

Breckyn Schilling had 15 points to lead North Mahaska. Sydney Anderson added 12 points and nine boards and Libby Hargis chipped in 12 points and six boards.

The Warhawks (17-1, 13-0) won the game despite shooting only 37 percent from the floor, 2-of-9 from 3 and 7-of-16 from the foul line.

North Mahaska out-rebounded the Hawks 30-23, committed 16 turnovers and had a 21-13 advantage in points off turnovers. The Warhawks have won 17 straight games and are 17-0 against teams from the state of Iowa.
