Newton girls fall to SE Polk in first-ever sanctioned wrestling dual

Machin registers 13-second pin to lead Cardinals in season opener

PLEASANT HILL — Ella Machin claimed the first-ever sanctioned girls wrestling victory for Newton on Monday, but the Cardinals lost 57-15 to Southeast Polk in their season and program debut.

Machin won her match by fall in 13 seconds at 190 pounds. Stella Cupples also won 14-7 at 120 and Elizabeth Elliott took a forfeit at 100.

The Cardinals surrendered 24 points in forfeits and were 2-6 in contested matches.
