Richardson leads Baxter cross country teams at Nevada

Bolts compete in tough field at Indian Creek Country Club

NEVADA — Baxter’s boys’ cross country team had just enough runners to compete for a team score at the Nevada Invitational on Monday.

Five boys and three girls made their way around the 5K course at Indian Creek Country Club. And Matt Richardson led the way with an 18th-place finish in the boys’ race.

Zoey Gliem led the Baxter girls with a 36th-place finish.

Seven ranked teams were involved in the varsity races and the top two finishers also are currently individually ranked.

Richardson’s 18th-place finish was clocked in 18 minutes, 24 seconds, which was the second-best time of his career.

Gliem’s 36th-place finish was clocked in 24:05.25. Emie Tuhn finished 47th in 25:09.94 and Regan Russell was 58th in 26:41.95.

Class 3A No. 11 Nakia Olivierre of Iowa Falls-Alden/AGWSR was the girls’ winner in 19:17.74. Class 3A No. 21 Liza Schaffer of North Polk was the runner-up in 20:36.84.

Class 3A No. 5 Gilbert won the girls’ team race with 33 points. Class 3A No. 13 North Polk and 3A No. 15 IF-A/AGWSR each scored 62 points, but North Polk finished second because of a better finish from its sixth runner.

Baxter’s Logan Jones was 41st in the boys’ race and his time was clocked in 20:29.65. Logan Rainsbarger was 46th in 21:00.34, Maddox Peters (24:48.19) finished 70th and Hudson Bethards (26:58) ended up 75th.

Class 3A No. 3 Zach Sporaa of North Polk won the boys’ race in 16:09.74. Class 3A No. 11 Max Sporaa of North Polk was the runner-up in 16:38.02.

Class 3A No. 1 North Polk won the boys’ meet title with 25 points, while 3A No. 6 Gilbert (37) was second and 1A No. 6 East Marshall (88) finished third. Host and 3A No. 19 Nevada (90) was two points back in fourth.

Notes: The official scoring did not have Richardson listed in the boys’ results so Baxter’s boys’ team was not included in the team standings. Bolts head coach Dennis Vaughn contacted the timing company, but an update online has not yet been made.
