Newton girls soccer wins third straight after rallying past Knoxville

Cardinals record 10th win despite falling behind in the first half

KNOXVILLE — Newton’s girls soccer team needed a rally against Knoxville on the road on Friday night.

The Cardinals trailed 1-0 at halftime but scored three times in the second half and won 3-1. Newton completed a two-game sweep of the Panthers after winning 6-0 at home in the season opener.

The victory for Newton is its third straight. The Cardinals improve to 10-4, while Knoxville falls to 8-7.

Audrey Rausch and Brynn Cazett each had goals for Newton and Rori Nehring registered five saves.

The Cardinals took 23 shots and attempted six corner kicks.

Newton hosts Class 2A No. 1 Dallas Center-Grimes at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at H.A. Lynn Stadium.

The Cardinals open 2A regional play against Central Iowa United at 6 p.m. on Friday in Newton.
