Newton girls golf competes in first 18-hole tournament of spring

Heryford earns runner-up medalist with a 2-over-par 73 at Otter Creek

ANKENY — Rylee Heryford shot a 2-over-par 73 and earned runner-up honors at the Toni Dickey Golf Invitational at Otter Creek on Thursday.

The Cardinals girls golf team played in their first 18-hole tournament of the season and placed sixth in the 13-team field.

Newton shot a 391 and edged Ames (392) by one stroke. West Des Moines Valley won the meet with a 326, while the rest of the top five included Clear Lake (340), Marshalltown (345), Ankeny Centennial (375) and Southeast Polk (383).

The other six teams in the field featured Ankeny (394), Dallas Center-Grimes (406), Dowling Catholic (408), Indianola (417), Des Moines East (499) and Fort Dodge (544).

Heryford was one shot back of meet medalist Saffire Sayre of West Des Moines. Sayre shot a 1-over-par 72. Marshalltown’s Amber Henson and Clear Lake’s Rebecca Long both shot 75.

Newton’s second best golfer was Marin Pettigrew, who shot a 100. The other two counting scores came from Ella Price (108) and Addison Hook (110). Sophia Reynolds (121) and Evie Main (123) had non-counting scores.
