Newton girls soccer dominates Oskaloosa

Rausch, Cazett combine for 10 goals in Cardinals’ win over Indians

Audrey Rausch registered a career-best six goals, Brynn Cazett scored a career-high four times and Newton’s girls soccer team cruised past Oskaloosa, 10-0, on Tuesday night.

The Cardinals led the Little Hawkeye Conference match 6-0 at halftime. They improved to 5-0 and 2-0 in conference play.

“We made improvements in the three areas we wanted to prior to game time — SOT, passing strings and missed passes,” Newton girls soccer coach Abby Lamont said. “We will keep working on our finishing and control of the midfield as we face ranked competition in the coming weeks.”

Newton has registered four shutouts in its five matches. The Cardinals are outscoring their opponents 28-1 this spring.

Oskaloosa fell to 0-5 and 0-3 in conference play. The Indians have been outscored 36-1.

Newton recorded 41 shots and held a 34-0 advantage in shots on goal. The match ended in the 50th minute due to the 10-goal mercy rule.

Rausch added one assist to her six goals. She now has 18 goals and 40 points this season, which rank third and second, respectively, in the state.

Cazett paired three assists with her four goals and Morgan Peterson tallied the team’s other assist. Cazett now has six goals and a team-best seven assists this spring.
