Newton boys tennis falls to Pella Christian

Ethan Valtman wins twice in Cardinals’ loss to Eagles

Ethan Valtman registered his first two varsity wins for Newton’s boys tennis team on Tuesday, but the Cardinals lost their Little Hawkeye Conference opener to Pella Christian.

The Eagles won the dual 8-3 and were 3-1 in three-set matches.

“We again were a little slow to start off the match. We were up in some of the singles matches and let the opponents back in,” Newton boys tennis coach Jared Gerber said. “Our focus will continue to be winning the big points and putting together good shots to win games.”

Valtman opened his evening with a three-set win at No. 6 singles. He downed Carter Vos 6-7, 6-2, 10-6. He then teamed up with Andrew Wiles at No. 4 doubles and they won 6-3, 6-2.

“The star of the match was Ethan Valtman, who won both his singles match and doubles match and got his first two varsity wins,” Gerber said. “He battled back after losing the first set of singles.”

The other Cardinal win came at No. 2 doubles where John Valtman and Evan Marshall claimed a 7-6, 6-4 victory.

Newton (0-2 overall, 0-1 in conference matches) lost three three-set matches. John Valtman lost at No. 2 singles 6-3, 4-6, 5-10.

Blake Baumgartner and Kael Swarts fell 6-4, 1-6, 6-10 at No. 1 doubles and Seth Adams and Collin Buchli were downed 6-7, 7-6, 11-13 in a very competitive match at No. 3 doubles.

Swarts dropped a close match 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles and Cayden Jackson and David Holmes were defeated 7-5, 6-4 at No. 5 doubles.

“We have two tough meets to end the week and will need to start quicker in those matches,” Gerber said.
