Baxter girls rout Madrid, boys come up short

Selover sets new school record for career blocks in win over Tigers

MADRID — Baxter’s girls basketball team overcame a slow start with a big second quarter and the Bolts pulled even further ahead with a dominating fourth during a 45-21 road win over Madrid on Monday.

The Bolts led 8-7 after one but outscored the Tigers 22-5 to pull away in the non-conference contest. Baxter (3-0) won the fourth 13-3.

Baxter defeated Madrid (0-5) despite shooting just 26 percent from the floor and 8-of-19 from the free-throw line. It was 7-of-24 from 3-point range and committed 16 turnovers.

Emie Tuhn finished with a career-high 14 points, three rebounds and three assists and Lilie Vansice recorded her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 boards. Vansice also swiped four steals.

Mandee Selover chipped in seven points, seven rebounds, two steals and three blocks. She’s now the school’s career shot block leader with 21.

Elie Tuhn registered eight points, two rebounds, two assists and four steals. Ally Padget finished with three rebounds and three steals.

Off the bench, Abbie Meyer had four points and two rebounds, Bree Buswell collected five steals and two assists and Kendyl Stevenson grabbed two boards.

BOYS

Madrid 60, Baxter 58

The Bolts couldn’t recover from their slow start in the boys’ game and suffered their first loss of the season.

Madrid led 24-9 after one and won 60-58 after a big rally from Baxter.

Cody Damman missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer but finished with 13 points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals to lead the Bolts.

Treyton Travis put in a career-high 16 points and grabbed five boards, Carson Scroggins had nine points and seven rebounds and Rory Heer and Cael Shepley each scored eight points.

Heer added two rebounds and two steals, Shepley dished out two assists and Nate McMinamen chipped in four points, seven rebounds and two assists. Trice Clapper grabbed three boards.

The Bolts (2-1) shot 38 percent from the floor, 7-of-29 from 3-point range and 9-of-12 from the foul line. They only committed seven turnovers. Baxter won the second quarter 12-7, had a 15-10 advantage in the third and outscored the Tigers 22-19 in the fourth.

Madrid (3-1) shot 47 percent from the floor. Toryn Severson scored a game-high 22 points and Brady Leonard added nine points and grabbed 21 of the team’s 33 rebounds.
