L-S football downs Belle Plaine, wins district title

Hawks rush for 244 yards in district road triumph over Plainsmen

SULLY — It’s been quite the turnaround for Lynnville-Sully’s football team.

The Hawks went 1-5 last season, lost their final five games and couldn’t score more than 14 points in the last four.

But on Friday, L-S won its seventh straight game, rushed for 244 yards and downed Belle Plaine, 25-8, in a battle for the Class 1A District 6 championship.

The Hawks led 25-0 after three quarters and held one of the top rushing teams in Class A to only 3.6 yards per carry.

The win secured the district title for the Hawks, who go into the postseason as the No. 1 seed out of Class A District 6. L-S begins its playoff run with a home game against Highland (3-5) at 7 p.m. on Friday in Sully.

The Hawks led 6-0 after one following a 1-yard TD run by Lane Fisk. They added another touchdown in the second, this time a 9-yard scoring run by Maxwell Mintle.

L-S (7-1 overall, 6-0 in the district) scored 13 points in the third. Kyle Squires scored on a 20-yard run with 8:32 to play in the frame. Corder Noun Harder capped the scoring with a 5-yard TD run.

Noun Harder led the Hawks with 133 rushing yards and one score on 14 carries.

Squires gained 73 yards on nine carries and Mintle finished with 18 yards on four carries. Conner Maston threw for 28 yards and rushed for 13 and Bryce Richards caught one pass for 28 yards.

Squires led the Hawk defense with 13 1/2 tackles, while Fisk registered 10 1/2 tackles.

Mathias Torres collected five tackles and recovered a fumble, Maston had five tackles and snagged an interception, Richards secured five tackles and Mintle and Ty Jones each had four tackles. Caleb Rea finished with 3 1/2 tackles.

Belle Plaine (6-2, 5-1) gained 224 total yards but needed 51 carries to gain 185 rushing yards.
